DiCarlo Laboratory: Macrophage Research
Lux Virtual worked with the DiCarlo Biotech laboratory at UCLA to create renderings that illustrate some of their current research. This rendering shows macrophages (white blood cells) that have been attached to a grid of protein stamps on a microchip made of a special material. The macrophage tries to "eat" the protein stamp (like it would eat a harmful intruder to the body). By measuring the bulge of surface beneath the macrophage, researchers are able to precisely determine if the macrophage is strong or weak.
